Answers you can act on.
SymptomFacts.com — an independent home-services journal.
Most people replace a roof twice in their life, a set of windows once, and a furnace three or four times. You never get enough repetitions to become a confident buyer — but the contractors, lenders and manufacturers on the other side of the table do this every day. SymptomFacts exists to level that table.
What we publish
Practical guides to the systems that keep a house working — roofing, windows and doors, heating and cooling, insulation, solar, plumbing, gutters, siding and home security — plus the money questions that surround them: what jobs actually cost, how to read a quote, how to vet a contractor, and how big projects get financed.
Every guide is written to end in a decision. Cost figures are given as ranges because that is how real pricing behaves, and we tell you which factors move a project toward the top or bottom of the range for your home.
How the site is funded
SymptomFacts.com is free to read because it is supported by advertising. Some pages carry ads, and some links may lead to offers from partners; when you click those links we may receive compensation. Two things never change because of that:
- Advertising does not buy conclusions. Partners do not review, approve or preview editorial content, and no ranking, comparison or recommendation on this site is ever sold.
- Sponsored material is labeled. If content is paid for, it says so. If it doesn't say so, it wasn't.
Our full advertising disclosure appears in the footer of every page.
Editorial standards
Sourced, then checked
Cost ranges are compiled from published industry cost data and real quote structures, then sense-checked by editors against regional variation before publication.
Nothing pay-to-play
No contractor, lender or manufacturer can pay to appear in a guide, alter a comparison, or remove a criticism. Rankings and verdicts are editorial only.
Kept current
Guides are dated, reviewed on a rolling basis, and corrected promptly when readers or new data show us something wrong. Corrections are made in place.
What we are not
We are not a contractor marketplace, we do not sell leads under the guise of advice, and we do not provide professional services. Guides on this site are general information for planning and comparison — final decisions about your home should always involve licensed local professionals who have seen the actual job. See our disclaimer for the formal version.
