What Causes Campylobacter?

Contaminated Water

Dreamstime

In addition to being consumed in the form of food or drink, Campylobacter can be transmitted in other ways. One example is through contaminated water. When creatures defecate, their waste can contain Campylobacter bacteria. This can be transmitted to humans through the fecal-to-oral transmission route. It's always important to make sure animals are not being housed or grazed near water sources used for human consumption. This type of illness happens infrequently in the United States and Canada. Campylobacter transmission through contaminated water is mostly a problem in the developing world.
