What Causes Eosinophilia?

Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

FindATopDoc

Acute myelogenous leukemia is a form of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood, the former of which is a type of spongy tissue located within the bones. The disease has a rapid progression to it that adversely affects certain white blood cells in the body. Most patients who suffer from this cancer will also suffer from eosinophilia. The symptoms associated with early stages of acute myelogenous leukemia appear very similar to symptoms of the flu or a cold. Additional symptoms include frequent infections, bleeding, fever, bone pain, shortness of breath, and easy bruising. The exact cause for this cancer is currently unknown, though it occurs when certain immature cells develop into white blood cells that are leukemic. Potential risk factors include smoking, exposure to radiation, and increased age. Treatment typically involves chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.
