Although rare, hives can show up in people with lupus. Usually, redness of the skin is limited to a butterfly-shaped rash on the cheeks and nose. This type of rash affects about fifty percent of people with lupus and can show up at random, just prior to a flare-up, or after direct exposure to the sun.
